Acne Prone Skin Care Regimen and Products That Really Work

What Is Acne Prone Skin?

Acne-prone skin is more sensitive to blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules, or cysts caused either by inflammation or clogged pores in the skin. Because of its sensitivity compared to other skin types, individuals with acne-prone skin have to take greater caution when choosing skincare products.

Causes

Not all acne-prone skin is due to the same root cause. In some individuals, a hereditary condition may be the cause, such as excess sebum production or rosacea. In other individuals, lifestyle could be the culprit.

Here are the most common reasons for acne-prone skin:

  • Using the wrong products: harsh products could do more harm than good for your skin.
  • Bad skincare habits: an inconsistent routine, poor hygiene, or incorrect application of products can lead to acne-prone skin.
  • Hormones: hormonal acne often shows up in the cheeks, jawline, and chin, caused by hormones from PCOS, menstruation, insulin spikes, and more.
  • Fungal acne: overgrowth of yeast under the skin’s surface could be the culprit for acne-prone skin.

Skincare Routine for Acne Prone Skin

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to a skincare routine for acne-prone skin. The root cause of acne-prone skin determines how an individual should care for it each day. For example, an individual with acne-prone skin that is also very dry could benefit from an oil-based cleanser, but that may not be the right option for an individual with excess sebum production.

Skin Products for Breakouts

Breakouts don’t mean that use of any skin care product will help clear it up. Skin care products should be able to treat the type of skin you have. They should also be free from harsh chemicals that could pose further risk of damage to your skin barrier.

Opt for clean skincare products that are botanically formulated to be gentle on skin, giving your skin the nutrients it needs to heal and strengthen.

Is Double Cleansing Good for Acne Prone Skin?

Double cleansing requires using an oil-based cleanser first to remove makeup and balance the skin’s natural oils followed by a gentle cleanser to clean the skin. If your acne-prone skin is the result of overly dry skin, you should avoid the double cleansing method. However, there are many types of acne-prone skin that benefit from double cleansing, including oil skin, as the double cleansing can help manage excess sebum production.

Tips for How to Get Clear Skin

Achieving clear skin requires consistency and patience. Over time, an optimal skincare routine for acne-prone skin will clear clogged pores and repair the skin barrier. Because the skin barrier takes time to heal, don’t expect immediate clear skin right away, especially if your current skin has more severe acne.

Here are some tips to follow that will help you clear out clogged pores and achieve glowing, beautiful skin:

  • To get clean skin, eat a clean diet. Your skin is often a reflection of your diet. A skin-focused diet is filled with Omega-3, vitamin C, zinc, and antioxidants.
  • Be consistent in your routine. It may be hard to muster up the energy to wash your face at night. But, clear skin requires getting all the oil, dirt, and makeup out of your pores before bed. Nighttime routines are essential for an overnight skin reset.
  • Use a clay mask. A clay mask for acne-prone skin draws out impurities, absorbs excess oil, and exfoliates pores. Use 1-2 times per week in your skincare routine.
  •  Don’t touch your face. You have heard it before, but we will say it again. Your hands accumulate more oil, dirt, and bacteria throughout the day than your face.

Ready to take the step towards clearer skin? Sometimes, it requires changing or adding only one product in your skincare routine. Other times, it requires an entirely new routine. Our custom skincare bundles are designed to help you build your own ritual, based on the root cause for your acne-prone skin.
